Green Road Solutions distinguishes itself through its innovative approach to sustainable infrastructure, particularly in Bhutan. Established on October 14, 2014, it is the nation's first and only company utilizing waste plastics in road construction, transforming environmental challenges into durable infrastructure solutions.Green Road Solutions has pioneered the integration of waste plastics into blacktopping roads, effectively substituting imported bitumen. This approach has led to the blacktopping of 160.5km kilometers of roads and the reuse of 857 tons of waste plastics, significantly reducing environmental pollution and conserving resources. USD 6000000 worth of bitumen rom India has been saved over the last 10 years.By replacing imported bitumen with recycled plastics, the company has achieved substantial cost savings and minimized reliance on foreign materials. This strategy not only reduces the financial burden on the government but also addresses the pressing issue of plastic waste management in Bhutan.The roads constructed using this technology exhibit enhanced durability, with lifespans extended by five years compared to conventional methods. This longevity results in lower maintenance costs and improved road quality for users.Originating as a volunteer-driven initiative, Green Road Solutions has evolved into a full-fledged enterprise, creating employment opportunities across various municipalities. The company currently employs 60 individuals, with plans to expand to 200, contributing to local economic.Green Road Solutions stands out by effectively addressing environmental concerns through innovative engineering, economic efficiency, and community involvement, setting a precedent for sustainable infrastructure development in Bhutan and beyond.In 3–5 years, The Green Road will evolve into Bhutan’s flagship green infrastructure solution, employing hundreds, diverting thousands of tons of plastic waste, building resilient roads and structures, and inspiring similar models in the Himalayan region and beyond. Our work will be backed by strong data, protected by thoughtful patents, and driven by empowered communities.The Green Road has partnered with several notable organizations to scale impact and innovation. We work with the Royal Government of Bhutan, including MoIT and local governments, to integrate plastic roads into national standards like the Schedule of Rates 2024. With Paro Dzongkhag, we signed a 5-year MoU to collect, process, and use local plastic waste in road construction. We’ve collaborated with ICIMOD and NIUA (India) through regional innovation platforms to share our model. Through the PLEASE Project, we supported We Care in Mongar with a plastic shredder, creating a decentralized collection system. We also work with schools and CSOs for advocacy and awareness. These partnerships provide technical, policy, and community support to strengthen our circular economy model.The Green Road solution is applicable to any country facing plastic pollution, poor road infrastructure, and rising construction costs, especially in developing and mountainous regions. Our model is ideal for countries across South Asia (India, Nepal, Bangladesh) and Southeast Asia (Myanmar, Laos, Vietnam) where plastic waste management remains a challenge. It’s also relevant in African nations with similar infrastructure gaps and abundant plastic waste. We see strong potential in India’s Northeast, given its proximity, shared climate, and growing interest in sustainable development. Our decentralized, low-cost, and climate-resilient model fits well in markets with limited access to advanced recycling or road technologies. With the right local partnerships, our solution can be replicated globally, turning waste into a resource for greener, longer-lasting roads.
