As part of our community outreach, The Therapy Room reaches out to “Invisible Communities” – people who have fallen through the cracks (e.g., senior citizens, low-income parents of children with special needs, underprivileged children from less developed countries who do not have access to mental health services). One such event is our mental health check-up for seniors. Singapore has an aging population where approximately 1 in 5 Singaporeans are aged 65 and above in 2024. By 2030, 1 in 4 Singaporeans are estimated to be 65 and above. Approximately 1 in 11 older adults have dementia, and 1 in 18 have depression. Since 2021, The Therapy Room has collaborated with Yong-En Active Hub to organise biannual mental health check-up for its seniors. The initiative started during the COVID-19 pandemic where there were higher rates of depression and cognitive decline among seniors. The team of psychologists and counsellors from The Therapy Room conducted one-on-one sessions with seniors to screen for depression and dementia. Cases at risk were then flagged up to Yong-En Active Hub for follow-up. Subsequently, the mental health check-up expanded its screeners and included experiential activities to improve the well-being of the seniors. For instance, in celebration of Valentine’s Day, The Therapy Room collaborated with make-up artists, hair stylists, and photographers to treat the seniors to a day of self-care – in addition to a mental health check-up, they had a makeover and confidently did a catwalk. Below are some testimonials from seniors who have benefited from the mental health check-up:“After my session with The Therapy Room, I gained a clearer understanding of my mental health status and the aspects I should pay attention to. I appreciated how they involved us in activities, such as crafting and hands-on rice ball making. It was a valuable experience that combined learning with engaging activities.”- Kum Yeng“The Therapy Room provides an intriguing outlet for expressing my feelings. After each session, it's beneficial to reflect on how I'm feeling now. I particularly enjoy the engagement with the art and craft aspect, especially with the hand drums, as they allow me to express what I've drawn on them.”- MaryAnnFor more information on collaborating, sponsoring, therapy sessions and/or assessments, please contact our team of psychologists and counsellors at The Therapy Room:+65-6467-8903contact [at] thetherapyroom.com.sg.
