TFit Foundation
President @ TFit Foundation Inc
TFit Foundation has developed a new employment pathway for people with developmental disabilities within the health and fitness industry through our “From Receiving Services to Providing Services” initiative.
To our knowledge, this type of structured pathway has not been widely developed within the disability community. Rather than limiting employment opportunities to traditional entry-level or support roles, TFit is creating a pathway in which people with developmental disabilities can build real skills and take meaningful roles as Assistant Trainers and Wellness Assistants, with the opportunity to advance as their abilities, confidence, and independence grow.
This video features Robert and Devin, two young adults who have been participating in disability services and who are now gaining hands-on experience as Assistant Trainers and Wellness Assistants at TFit. Under the supervision of experienced fitness professionals, they help lead warm-ups and cool-downs, demonstrate exercises, assist with boxing activities, hold pads, encourage participants, help maintain the flow of group sessions, and provide direct support to people exercising alongside them.
These are not symbolic roles. Robert and Devin are learning real responsibilities that contribute to the success of each session. As their skills develop, they are able to complete more tasks with greater independence and take on increased responsibility.
One of the most powerful parts of this initiative has been watching the change in confidence and happiness that comes with being trusted, needed, and given meaningful responsibility. It is amazing to watch how proud and engaged they become when they are helping lead a class, encouraging someone through an exercise, or realizing that other participants are looking to them for guidance. The growth is visible not only in what they can do, but in how they carry themselves, communicate, and connect with others.
TFit is structuring this into a progressive employment model with different levels of responsibility, supervision, and training. An individual may begin with supported Assistant Trainer duties and gradually move toward more independent responsibilities. When appropriate, participants may also have the opportunity to pursue professional fitness certifications and progress toward independent employment in the fitness and wellness field.
We have already seen how meaningful responsibility can build confidence, communication skills, independence, social awareness, and a stronger sense of purpose. At the same time, the model benefits the entire community. Participants in our fitness programs see people with developmental disabilities in leadership and helping roles, while the Assistant Trainers themselves become active contributors to the health and well-being of others.
TFit Foundation believes employment should go beyond simply finding a task for someone to perform. Meaningful employment should allow people to develop skills, take responsibility, build relationships, earn income, and know that their work matters.
Our long-term goal is to create paid Assistant Trainer and Wellness Assistant positions, establish structured levels of training and supervision, track measurable employment and skill-development outcomes, and create a model that can be replicated in fitness studios, disability organizations, day habilitation programs, adaptive fitness programs, community wellness programs, and other settings.
“From Receiving Services to Providing Services” represents a change in perspective. Instead of asking only what services a person with a developmental disability needs, we are also asking what skills they can develop, what responsibilities they can take on, and how they can help improve the lives of others.
Robert and Devin are helping us demonstrate what that can look like in real life.
